Calgary, AB – As school nutrition programs draw to an end in June, this year I Can for Kids is preparing for a dramatic increase in the need for their summer food program. Fourteen per cent of Calgarians are unable to afford basic needs, leaving thousands of families struggling to put food on the table every day. Whether due to a job loss, limited earnings, a health crisis, or escaping a life of abuse, many children and youth within the city will face food insecurity this summer. For many, it will be their hungriest time of the year. This can have detrimental effects on their health and the delay their academic performance at the start of the school year.
I Can for Kids is endeavouring to provide over 60,000 meals to hungry children and youth across Calgary this summer. Through a network of dedicated frontline agency and community partners, I Can for Kids provides child-friendly non-perishable food packs, fresh fruit, peanut butter, and an assortment of other nutritious items to school-aged children and youth who would otherwise go hungry during the summer break. “Summer can be the hardest and hungriest time of the year for thousands of kids who lose access to their school nutrition programs during the break,” says co-founder Sutton Garner. “We need the community’s help to reach a 60 per cent increase in demand for our food packs this summer.”
Starting April 27th, and running throughout the month of May, I Can for Kids will be in the community fundraising to reach their goal.
To kick off their efforts, Rotary Club of Calgary Olympic is challenging Calgarians to get involved by offering to match all donations received up to $10,000. You can double your impact by:
- Participating in our social media game of Tag by making a donation online at www.icanforkids.ca and tagging others to do the same
- Purchasing a $5 I Can for Kids food pack at any Calgary Save On Foods location during the month of May
