As Alberta’s oldest existing charity, the Children’s Hospital Aid Society (CHAS) is uniquely qualified in understanding the needs and challenges faced by many children and young adults in Alberta. For over 100 years, CHAS has supported projects that look after the health and wellbeing of children and young adults throughout Calgary and surrounding areas.
CHAS President, Patricia Rossiter, explains they support a number of projects, “from health and learning needs, front line support programs, equipment, research, to long standing camperships – anything that supports the physical and mental wellbeing of children and youth.” Annually, CHAS supports more than twenty groups, such as Deaf and Hearing Alberta, CUPS, The Alex, and Hospice Calgary.
“We are here to help,” says Rossiter.
In supporting I Can for Kids for the first time this year, Rossiter says they were “amazed” at the support shown by Calgarians. “The number of volunteers that have come out to put together the food packs for distribution during the summer months shows just how much Calgary wants to help, and will be there to step up for those in need.”
As a volunteer run organization, with minimal overhead expenses, Rossiter explains that lending a helping hand is their entire reason for being. She says that I Can for Kids is the perfect fit for CHAS. “All of our extensive volunteer work goes directly to the kids and youth either through our fundraising efforts or in direct hands-on assistance.”
“The Turko/Garner family has shown that there are large previously hidden pockets of hunger in Calgary and they have gone a long way to fill the gap in many families’ lives. This program is the best way to make a direct difference to those in hunger during the summer months.”
