Food insecurity can sometimes be an overlooked issue in a large city like Calgary. Fortunately, there are many agencies and programs in Calgary and surrounding areas working to bring an end to food insecurity and provide children, youth, and their families with nutritious meals.
By working and connecting with other agencies and programs, I Can for Kids is able to extend our reach into the community and provide support to Calgarians unable to meet their basic needs by providing multi-meal and grab and go food packs to hungry children and youth.
Traditionally summer is a time when many of our community partners and regular donors are out of town, and we really feel a drop in resources, especially food. Roughly 40% of the youth we see do not have a permanent place to call home let alone money to pay for groceries. The services provided by I Can for Kids is amazing, and so helpful to our community. The staff are always checking in to make sure they are meeting our needs.”
– Team Lead, The Alex Youth Health Centre
I Can for Kids works with a wide variety of agencies and programs, such as the Calgary Housing Company, The Alex Youth Health Centre, CUPS, Hull Services, and many others. Each of our agency and community partners understands the effects of hunger on children and youth and are eager to work with I Can for Kids to ensure they receive the nutritional support they need over the summer break.
The I Can for Kids program created a great opportunity for me to check in with families and to ensure that kids had healthy snacks and meals. By providing the food packs to kids, I’m able to open a dialogue about food security issues which often led to discussion of other needs and issues.”
– Tenant Liaison, Calgary Housing Company
Food insecurity can be tackled by working together to provide resources to those struggling to meet their basic needs. Through collaboration and partnership, I Can for Kids continues to develop an effective program designed to reach vulnerable kids where they live and play all summer long.
Each of us has a critical role to play in the wellbeing of our community and those at risk of the effects of poverty. Thank you to all our partners, we couldn’t do what we do without you!
