For many, making the choice between food and other needs, such as paying rent, is an everyday reality.
In 2016, 127,000 Calgarians were living below the poverty line and unable to meet their basic needs. This number amounts to one in 10 Calgarians who struggle with meeting basic needs such as housing, transportation, healthcare, and food.
When faced with the decision to pay rent or other bills, purchase necessary medication, or any other need, food may be the first thing that is cut from the list.
Something as simple as packing a snack for your child to eat during summer camp, is not simple for some.
An I Can for Kids food pack recipient explains, “snacks are too expensive for me to buy on our food budget. I Can for Kids lets my kids be part of the normal group at day care.”
Thousands of families in Calgary cannot afford to make ends meet and have to make difficult decisions like skipping meals and going hungry on a daily basis.
Another I Can for Kids food pack recipient says that with three sons and no financial support from their father, paying rent, monthly utilities, purchasing items for their sons to attend school, and also treat them once in a while is difficult to manage.
“My elder son has just completed high school and looking for work to support us, but food costs are high and providing daily lunch and healthy meals is difficult. Having donations for food from I Can Kids has helped to save some money to go towards other things that need paying for. Three teenage boys eat a lot!”
No one should have to make the decision to go hungry in order to pay for other necessities.
This summer with your help, we are working hard to provide over 70,000 meals to hungry kids in Calgary, a 20% increase since last year and double from 2017.
