For two years, the Rotary Club of Calgary Fish Creek has been a valuable supporter of I Can for Kids. In addition to donating to the program, Rotary Club of Calgary Fish Creek is not afraid to roll up their sleeves. In May, members collected donations of peanut butter to be delivered along with I Can for Kids food packs and fresh fruit. Members also help by assembling food packs before they go out to thousands of hungry children and youth during the summer. “As a small group, we like the idea of working with a grassroots organization where we can get directly involved with hands-on work,” says Vern Lessoway, Community Services Director.
After listening to a presentation from I Can for Kids co-founder Sutton Garner two years ago, Lessoway, says she “immediately had us hooked.”
Rotary Club of Calgary Fish Creek focuses on supporting organizations that serve those in unfortunate circumstances. This includes homeless individuals, those facing abuse or addiction, as well as low income families that cannot afford food on a regular basis. The club believes it is important to be involved in charitable causes to help ease their workload, as many are often understaffed and have limited resources. “We also believe that showing that we care can make a positive difference in the community,” says Lessoway.
A dedicated volunteer himself, Lessoway explains that they are passionate about being involved with I Can for Kids because it focuses on the well-being of Calgary’s kids. “From the beginning, I Can for Kids has operated with a uniqueness and professionalism beyond the size and age of the organization.”
