Donating fresh fruit and vegetables to a variety of organizations in their communities throughout Calgary, Saskatoon, and Surrey, is Thomas Fresh’s duty explains CEO, Roy Hinchey.
“At Thomas Fresh, we’re proud to donate fresh, nutritious products to local and national organizations located in Western Canada and beyond,” says Hinchey, “Our goals are aligned with helping feed less fortunate families and individuals, supporting community events, and aiding schools and groups who encourage health and well-being.”
As first year sponsors, Thomas Fresh was not aware of the gap that exists for children and youth who rely on school nutrition programs in the summer prior to being introduced to I Can for Kids. “We immediately felt tied to the mission of ending childhood hunger in Calgary and recognized that our fruits and vegetables could be of value to this wonderful program,” says Hinchey.
In 2018, Thomas Fresh set a goal to reach more youth with donations from their Calgary location. “We understand how crucial it is for youth to get enough nutrients from what they eat. A proper diet helps children thrive in their studies and reach their full potential both in and out of school.”
“It means the world to us to help kids reach their full potential with high quality fruits and vegetables.”
While this may be their first year helping with I Can for Kids, Hinchey assures that it will not be their last. Hinchey explains that it is an honor to donate to an organization that works so hard to help children and youth in Calgary. “Bobbi, Sutton and Michael work around the clock to provide Calgary children in need with meals to eat on a weekly basis. They go above and beyond to ensure these children are enjoying their meal kits and the families can easily use the ingredients provided for the family packs.”
“I Can for Kids takes extra care to make their program as impactful as possible, this was why we were honoured to partner with them, as we share these same values with our company practices.”
What is your favorite childhood memory of summer? Going for a bike ride in the summer time to get ice cream! There is nothing better than the wind in your hair on a hot summer day and a huge scoop of cookies and cream. So many of our best childhood memories revolve around eating and we want to help make new memories for those who may not have consistent access to this basic need.”

Hinchey says that while it may not be an issue that immediately comes to mind, he hopes others will become more involved in the fight against childhood summer hunger. “With 36,000 meals distributed in 2017 and on route to do a staggering 64,000 meals for this summer – we urge other companies and individuals to get involved to help fight this Calgary issue.”
