University District’s Northwestival

December 4, 2018 By I Can for Kids

Celebrate Calgary’s Premiere Winter Celebration of Community Spirit and Holiday Cheer

When the weather outside is frightful, Calgary’s University District shares plans for something delightful. Northwestival is back, a winter warm up event on December 9 that made a splash last year, showcasing University District’s (U/D) signature style and people-first design.

Northwestival Winter Warmup - I Can for Kids

The feel-good annual community event will feature a wide range of unique local artisans, performers and entrepreneurs who celebrate the cultural landscape of Calgary. From a plaza full of snowmen and delicious s’mores to fat bikes and warming fire pits, the best-of-winter activities, entertainment and treats will tease you outside to make lasting memories with neighbours, friends, families, and pets. Join us for some festival fun!

DETAILS

What: Northwestival Event

When: December 9, 2018 from 1:00 – 6:00 p.m.

Where: Field 9, University of Calgary, 2 Blocks East of the University District Discovery Centre, at the intersection of 39th Street NW and University Ave.

University District strives to elevate traditional holiday giving – and warm hearts and minds – through several initiatives that surprise and delight neighbours in need. Leading up to and during the event, Calgarians are encouraged to donate to this year’s Northwestival local charity , I Can for Kids. Founded by now 14-year-old Sutton garner, the organization aims to end summer childhood hunger in Calgary. Donations will help feed hungry children in more than 60 communities in Calgary next year.

To participate, we are encouraging festival-goers to bring an unopened jar of peanut butter (almond or cashew too!) or a cash donation as admission to Northwestival. Donations of peanut butter are also being accepted at the University District Discovery Centre from November 20-December 9. Why peanut butter? It is a staple item with I Can for Kids because it is one of the few type of nutritious foods that kids can easily prepare and can store well for a long period of time. We hope everyone will join us to help raise donations for this meaningful cause.

“Being a monthly donor is easy to do, you sign up once and know that you are helping support I Can for Kids all year round. Providing a regular source of income allows them to focus on ending summer hunger for kids and not be worrying about how to fund their program. I encourage everyone to give this way and let I Can for Kids get on with making a difference to the kids that need their support.”

Susan C.

“We’ve had hungry kids with us during the summer before. They would linger after the end of the day, and they would ask the staff to make them meals. We aren’t having that this year. Thank you I Can for Kids for your support!”

Boys & Girls Clubs of Calgary

“I am so glad you guys are coming to this park, I haven’t eaten in three days, thank you so much!”

12-year old Park n’ Play participant

“We can’t reduce hunger alone, collaboration and support each other is critical. Offering hungry kids the opportunity to take an I Can for Kids food pack home is really a blessing to families in need. We look forward to another GREAT year of ending summer hunger together!”

Community Kitchen Program of Calgary

“I Can for Kids truly came at a perfect time. I have left an unsafe situation which consisted of abuse of many forms, specifically financial abuse. You have totally warmed mine and my children’s heart.”

I Can for Kids food pack recipient

“Many families expressed to our staff how helpful the I Can for Kids program was for them, decreasing their stress. Many expressed particular gratitude for the help the food packs provided during the expensive back to school season.”

Hull Services

“The individuals we work with are often dealing with various barriers, and food security is consistently one. We usually do not have the opportunity to address the need in the capacity that we have this summer through our partnership with I Can for Kids, and it has been so great!”

Carya

“When the kids saw the bananas the first week, they were so excited – as if they’d wont the lottery. It was amazing to see how happy they were to get something as simple as a banana. It’s also a reminder of the level of need in the community.”
