As part of National Volunteer Week, we have been introducing you to some of our volunteers (via social media) who help keep us running. They work their magic to make sure we provide the best program possible for kids in Calgary every summer. Our volunteers do everything from graphic design and bookkeeping, to preparing our warehouse and assembling thousands of food packs. Each person has something special to share and we endeavour to make it a rewarding experience, personally and professionally.
“I am so impressed when I see people identify a need, show initiative and invest the energy required to make a positive impact on our communities. Even my modest contribution made a real difference to many children’s lives. It was an incredibly rewarding experience.” S.B. – I Can for Kids volunteer
Many who volunteer would agree that giving back leads to a more fulfilling life. By volunteering your time with an organization or cause, often times, you get back more than you give. A study published by Statistics Canada found that in 2010, almost half of Canadians were volunteering their time with nonprofit or charitable organizations. These individuals identified that the benefits to volunteering are numerous.
Meet new people
Volunteering is an amazing opportunity to meet new people. The study found that 46 per cent of participants were motivated to volunteer to network or meet new people. Volunteering can be a chance to meet like minded individuals who share a passion for giving back like you do. Meeting people from all walks of life and backgrounds can lead to a more enriched and fulfilling life.
Feel a sense of accomplishment
Putting in work and watching your efforts come to fruition can be extremely satisfying. Knowing that others are benefitting from these efforts only adds to your sense of accomplishment.
Help advance your career
Volunteering can be a new opportunity to practice new or existing skills. In addition, for many career paths, networking can help to further advance an already existing or new career. Volunteering with others who may work or know of others who work in your field can help further grow your network.
Volunteering your time and experience can help lead to a more fulfilling life for numerous reasons. Statistics Canada found that 93 percent of participants started volunteering to make a lasting contribution to their community. Not only are you affecting change in the world around you, but you will have the satisfaction of knowing you are helping. So why not give back!
At I Can for Kids, our volunteers mean the world to us. Without them, we would not be where we are. Thank you!
