This summer, I Can for Kids provided non-perishable food packs, fresh produce and peanut butter to kids across the city dealing with food insecurity to meet the 67 per cent increase in demand for our program this year. However, just because the summer is over, does not mean the need stops.
Many children and youth in Calgary struggle every day with food insecurity. So when children and youth start heading back to school, we start preparing for next summer.
According to a study recently published by Angus Reid, 6 per cent of Canadians visit a food bank or other service that provides free food regularly. This amounts to roughly 1.5 million Canadians struggling with food insecurity. In addition to this, one-in-six Canadians indicated they could not afford high quality, nutritious food when purchasing groceries.
For numerous reasons– perhaps faced with a job loss, a health crisis or limited earnings– thousands of families in Calgary struggle with food insecurity everyday. For many children and youth, school nutrition programs provide regular, nutritious food to help them get through the school day. However, when school comes to a close during the summer, these kids can find themselves without a regular source of meals.
We need your help to get us ready for next summer!
